Brain, You refer to the gray area as 'vaule earned by the offense' but that's not exactly true right? It could be value earned by special team or defense. For instance if a team started a drive at the opponents 10 due to an int., and lost 10 yards to the 20 by 4th down, the offense actually created negative value, no?
I guess what I mean is that all the circles for every team will always be the same size for each kick taken from the same spot on the field, right? Using your 47 yard FG example, aren't you really saying that the avg. Div 1 kicker makes that kick 50% of the time? So the kicker that makes it provides 1.5 points to his team above that of an average kicker? The sum of all kicks would provide the season value added/subtracted of a kicker. Does that come out to the same as netting the +FGV and -FGV figures? If so, I think that is the metric I'd like to see listed for all kickers. My vote would be to Danny Hrapmann (18.1 points above average) in that case with a runner-up vote to Alex Henery (17.1 points above average). Any thoughts?
Thanks for the comments. Yes, you are right that the value in gray is actually the combined value of the starting field position and the offense. I'm working on a better way to visualize all the moving parts here.
As for your comment about the +FGV and -FGV to determine a kicker's value added ... I think there are many, many ways to splice the FG values here and re-rank kickers. A kicker who makes one and only one kick from 47 yards is going to rank No. 1 according to FGE. But I don't know if value added is the absolute best way to rank kickers either, since a decent kicker that plays for a team that stalls over and over again in the red zone is likely to accumulate total FGV not because he's special but because his offense can't punch it in.
